ABSTRACT
The study basically focused attention
on “The Impact of Mass Media on the Success of Free and Fair 2011 General
Elections” (A case study of NTA, Ibadan). Mass media has over the years performs
a very crucial role in the socio- political and economic development of
Nigeria. Mass media are often referred to as the
fourth estate of realm because of the power they wield and the oversight function
they exercise. The media as a major player in democratic governance has been
recognized since the late 17th century, and remains a fundamental principle of
modern-day democratic theory and practice especially in educating,
enlightening, mobilizing the electorates before, during and after elections.
Mass media promote democracy and ensure free and fairness conduct of election
in the country by educating voters, protecting human rights, promoting
tolerance among various social groups, and ensuring that governments are
transparent and accountable. Media have been used to support democracy and
development. Critical reviews to related literature were made. Relevant
theories were used to gratify the study. Quantitative research design was used
in which cross-sectional survey method was adopted while the data collection
instrument was questionnaire. However, from all findings and facts as regards
literature materials, internet contents, opinions, interviews, media reports,
and responses from respondents, it is clear that the role of mass media in
political activities and free and fair elections cannot be over emphasized.
Mass media especially radio and television which provide avenue for the
illiterate citizen to get information about political activities do educate and
sensitize masses on various activities such as registration, how to handle
voter’s card, what to wear during election, how to participate in political
rally and campaign, to the activities on election day, coverage of election
result, coverage of post election activities like violence and tribunal. In
short it brings electoral activities to the door step of the electorate. Finally, it is recommended that media outfit
especially electronic media should as a matter of fact establish a special desk
to be called political desk; the desk should be well equipped in terms of human
and material resources to be able to serve the general public better.
Journalists should see their role in community especially during election as
vital which they must play their role with sincerity and with caution. Government should provide more freedom and
security for the press to act with fair or favour or report event on
duress.
