ABSTRACT
The aims and objective of this research project is
to analyze the extent of rapid development towards journalism education in
Nigeria universities and polytechnics and to educate students on Journalism
training in polytechnics. As Nigeria begins to
develop economically, socially, politically, the need for well trained
journalist became matter of top priority, therefore the low view about Nigerian
journalists and journalism at large is diminishing. The profession of
journalism suffered seriously in it’s development in Nigeria, not only because
of low illiteracy rate in the country, but because Nigeria had been colonized
by Britain, a country where there is little or no formal journalism training.
In Britain, one cannot pursue a formal degree programme in mass communication
or journalism in any of the British Universities and colleges. A critical
review to related literature was made. Quantitative research design was used in
which cross-sectional survey method was adopted while the data collection instrument
was questionnaire. From the findings of
this study, it has
been ascertained that journalism education in both universities and
polytechnics in Nigeria is highly commendable. Although, it is not the
quickness of decision process that matters most but the effectiveness of the
decision made. There is also a reduction in the carefree attitude of some
student in the aspect of journalism education in polytechnics because there is
a belief in Nigeria that only university graduate are recognize as intellectuals
in the society. Finally, as journalism education deals with reporting of events
accurately, it involves collecting, verifying, analyzing and presenting
information gathered regarding current events including issues trends and
people, it is therefore recommended that the Journalism students should enroll
into polytechnics, or universities to study mass communication or any
institution of journalism e.g. Nigeria union of Journalism (NUJ),
International Institute of Journalism (I I J). e.t.c.
