ABSTRACT
The
study basically focused attention on role of mass media in eradicating election
violence in Osun State (A case study of OSBC, Gold F.M, Unique F.M). Broadcast
media have over the years perform a very crucial role in the socio- political
and economic development of Nigeria. Mass media are
often referred to as the fourth estate of realm because of the power they wield
and the oversight function they exercise. The media as a major player in
democratic governance have been recognized since the late 17th century, and
remains a fundamental principle of modern-day democratic theory and practice
especially in educating, enlightening, mobilizing the electorates before,
during and after elections. Media have been used to support democracy and
development. Quantitative research design was used in which
cross-sectional survey method was adopted while the data collection instrument
was questionnaire. 120 copies of questionnaire were
printed and administered to the respondents. It is obvious from this study that Mass
media especially radio and television which provide avenue for the illiterate
citizen to get information about political activities do educate and sensitize
masses on various activities such as registration, how to handle voter’s card,
what to wear during election, how to participate in political rally and
campaign, to the activities on election day, coverage of election result,
coverage of post election activities like violence and tribunal. It is recommended
that Journalists should see their role in community especially during election
as vital which they must play their role with sincerity and with caution.
