INFLUENCE OF ADULT EDUCATION ON WOMEN DEVELOPMENT IN GOKANA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF RIVERS STATE

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Adult education, as an aspect of adult education is for national development as it encompasses developing the human (adults) mind, knowledge, attitude, skills, behavioural pattern, physical and necessary ideas capable of solving human and societal problems in order to achieve sustainable national development. In line with the global trend, Nigeria needs an educational approach that can accommodate young and old adults (male, female, the poor and rich) and serve as empowerment tool for livelihood and empowerment. Womens involvement in adult education or their interest in pursuing further education is not without its challenges.

The benefits of adult education to individuals and nations cannot be over-emphasized. Adult education is relied upon for sensitizing people to analytically assess the impact of governments economic, political, social environmental and general policies (Onyenemezu, 2013). In spite of the fact that there has been a remarkable increase in the participation of young girls and married women in educational pursuit and had continued to exhibit their desire or yearning for higher education, their efforts have continued to be limited by social norms and dictates (Marim and Greenberger cited in Kazeem 2008; Osunde and Omoruyi 2009). Experiences show that the low socio-economic status of women in Gokana Local Government Area has a relatively greater effect on the educational aspiration or desire to seek further education. Therefore, women who enlist in adult education programme are daily confronted with challenges that tend to undermine their efforts.

The increasing interest of women in adult education and its importance to nation building and development of individual woman demand that the challenges they face be exploited and identified with a view to helping to evolve measures that would enable women deal with them. In the opinion of Edukugho (2009) cited in Imogie (2005), the prosperity of a country depends not on the abundance of its revenue, nor the strength of its fortifications, but on the number of its cultivated citizens, men (and women) of education, enlightenment and character.
