ABSTRACT
The
core objective of the research was to examine effectiveness of radio in
promoting family values and norms with a particular focus on Okpe Local
Government in Delta State. Radio complement family value which is considered to
be the smallest unit in the society and one of the primary agents of
socialization where family norms, values, culture are passing from one
generation to the other. Majority of the respondents know about family and
norms especially values and norms peculiar to their own families which include
marriage, food and relationship. Radio promotes and propagates family values
and norms in Okpe Local Government Delta State whereas both the marriage and
traditional festival of the Okpe cultural values and norms attracted people.
Lack of sponsor and ownership influence are the challenges hindering effective
promotion of Okpe Local Government family norms and values because sponsorship
is the best way through which radio can effectively promote Okpe local
government family value and norms. It is recommended that radio should as a
matter of fact continue to design programmes that will continually propagate
and promote family values and norms.
