ABSTRACT
High
quest for freedom in the name of globalization and civilization especially in
the developed world which have promoted different sexual orientations and
behavior exhibition have now find it way to developing and underdeveloped
nations like Nigeria through legislation, international diplomacy, media
imperialism and cultural imperialism. Today, youth in Nigeria enjoy freedom
from parents especially those in higher citadels of learning where different
kinds of sexual orientations have been developed which homosexual is one of
them. Homosexuality being the romantic or sexual intercourse or behaviour
between members of the same sex, has attracted much interest and attention as a
social problems that needs to be investigated and solved. It is on this notion
that the research examines the awareness and perception of students towards
homosexuality and its effect on social values. The research is anchored on
cultivation theory and cultural imperialism theory respectively. Survey research
method as quantitative method was adopted in which 100 copies of questionnaires
were administered to respondents who are students of UNIPORT of which 90 copies
were retrieved. The data collected were analysed and interpreted using
Descriptive Statistics. Findings show
that majority of the students were aware but many said they never try or
practice such and that there is no tendency that they can practice it. It is
recommended that government should be conscious in legislation that can be
harmful to society while media particularly television and film industries should
be careful on what to showcase on their platforms to prevent corrupting the
society.
