ABSTRACT
The
study examined the effect of television cartoon network on the aggressive
behaviour of school going children using Empaa Nursery and primary school,
Ejigbo as a case study. Findings show that exposure to aggressive television
cartoons have increased children aggressiveness and violence behaviour. The
uses and gratification theory have provided ready explanation of why the youths
highly associated with the medium which provide them with message and images
that they view and accept. Aggressive television cartoons without doubt are
tool of changing the way and manner in which youth behave and act in society
especially within their peer group. Apart from the fact that television
educates, socialize and entertain youth, it also affects children in a negative
way. Through various television programmes many foreign contents are
transmitted to the children and is influencing youth mode of dressing,
speaking, attitude most especially their aggressive behaviour. Critical reviews
to related literature were made. Relevant theories were used to gratify the
study. Quantitative research design was used in which cross-sectional survey
method was adopted while the data collection instrument was questionnaire.
Questionnaires were used in eliciting the opinions of the school going
children. In conclusion, television cartoons have both positive and negative
effect on children and adolescence ways of life since youth and children tend
to behave and imitate what they see because see is believing even though
television now a day do transmit violence, sex and other foreign contents are
now influencing the socio cultural behaviour of children. Having examined the
topic and sought the opinions of respondents, some of the recommendations made
were that parents as a matter of fact should try to curb their children from
watching violence cartoons and sexy images televised on their screens. Parents
should dictate what their children should watch and when to watch so that they
will not be addicted to bad television programme.
