ABSTRACT
This study examined
the impact of cartoons on newspaper sales with a specific focus on The Nation
Newspaper, Lagos. It is a known fact that the funny displays of cartoon on any
print media do attract the attention of readers. Although, the word cartoon has
no specific definition over the time, modern usage refers to a typically
non-realistic or semi realistic drawing or painting intended for satire caricature
or humour of any important issue. An artiste who creates cartoons is called a
cartoonist. Critical reviews to related literature were made. Relevant theories
were used to gratify the study. Quantitative research design was used in which
cross-sectional survey method was adopted while the data collection instrument
was questionnaire. Based upon this research and findings, it is therefore
concluded that majority of the respondents believed that carton in Newspaper
sales is very important towards increasing newspaper publication and sales.
Those who agreed that the impact of carton can never be over looked are more
than those that disagreed. Therefore, the rate at which cartoonist is helping
newspaper sales seems very high in the right direction as part of the effort to
give more meaning to stories and crave readers interest towards newspaper
purchase. Finally, based on the findings of the study, the results gathered
have proved reasonably that there is need for recommendation to correct the
problem facing cartoonist, and in this wise the improvement of cartoons is very
imperative to newspaper as they serve in the area of information concerning
this, the following recommendations were made; Cartoons should be seen as
effective and productive part in the publication of newspaper and without
creative work of cartoonist in the Newspaper publication such paper will look
less impressive and creative for readers to read. Cartoonist should be
independent in every newspaper outfit to enhance effective production.
