ABSTRACT
The
study is structured within the cultivation and aggressive cue theoretical
perspectives, this research explores the influence of violence and criminal scenes
in movies on the aggressive behaviours of Youth in Nigeria. Gerbner, et. al.
(1976) says heavy Tv viewers will cultivate the perception of reality portrayed
by the television while exposure to violence scenes in movies by youth tends to
arouse violence behaviour or attitude in youth. Survey as a quantitative
research method was adopted in which 150 respondents majorly youth between the
age 15-30 were drawn using quota sampling technique. 150 copies of
questionnaires were administered and 136 copies were retrieved upon which the
analysis revolved. The research argument is justifiable associated with
conceptual and empirical findings that watching violence and criminal scenes in
movies triger aggressiveness in youth. The data collected was analysed and
interpreted using frequency and percentage method with tables. It was
recommended that parents should as a matter of fact monitor the television
viewing habits of their children and determine their watching hour and
contents.
